Microsoft opens GitHub Copilot engine inside Copilot Studio for complex agents

Microsoft made the GitHub Copilot harness generally available in Copilot Studio. The harness is the control layer that coordinates models, skills, memory, enterprise knowledge, workflows, MCP servers, connected agents, and files for reasoning-heavy multi-step work. Work IQ in Copilot Studio is in preview so harness-powered agents can pull organisational context such as email, calendar, files, Teams messages, and people data. Separately, the SharePoint Framework roadmap says Copilot Components (interactive cards, forms, and actions on the Copilot canvas) are in public preview, with general availability targeted for October 2026. Usage-based billing and credit governance still apply. Work IQ remains preview, and the October date for Copilot Components is a target that can move. Building this still needs maker permissions and admin controls.
Until now, most workplace Copilot value for non-developers lived inside Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and simple Copilot Chat replies. Copilot Studio felt like a separate track for lighter bots, while richer multi-step process work stayed hard to wire to real Microsoft 365 context and external tools without specialist help. That split is narrowing for makers who already have the right licences and controls. Agents can be designed as longer workflows with memory, skills, and org data, and SharePoint-style UI can sit on the Copilot canvas instead of text-only answers. For everyone else, the practical gap is sharper: the product is moving toward complex agents while day-to-day adoption still fails on task fit, review habits, and inconsistent drafts.
Analysis
Treat this as a trend to watch, not a reason to push agents on a team still learning basic app Copilot. Pick one multi-step process that already fails with a single prompt, then ask IT whether harness agents, Work IQ preview access, credit limits, and maker permissions are even in scope before anyone builds a pilot.
