Microsoft opens Fabric data agent management to external code

The Fabric data agent management-plane API reached public status on 1 July 2026. External tools and pipelines can now create, configure, update, and publish data agents without using the Fabric portal. SDK support extends outside Fabric itself. The change covers only management operations and leaves the existing in-product experience unchanged. No new end-user features were added to the agents themselves.
Until now every data agent lived inside the Fabric portal and required manual clicks for creation, updates, and publishing. That kept the surface small and visible to the people already working inside Fabric. Opening the management API moves control to code and external systems. For teams already struggling with undocumented Power Query steps and Excel exports that break on refresh, this adds another layer that must be governed, versioned, and explained to stakeholders who still question the numbers.
Analysis
Ignore the API until your current reports stop depending on undocumented Excel files and Power Query steps that only one person understands. Audit every data source and KPI definition in your existing monthly pack before you consider writing code to deploy agents at scale.
