Microsoft moves home site controls into the SharePoint admin center

Microsoft updated SharePoint home site documentation on 25 June 2026. The changes add direct creation and designation controls inside the SharePoint admin center, plus new Resources and Announcements web parts and filmstrip News layouts. General availability is targeted for the end of June 2026 after Targeted Release in May. Existing Viva Connections setups continue to work. The SharePoint app in Teams receives updated default branding. Multiple home sites still require management through the Microsoft 365 admin center.
Before this update, designating a home site meant jumping between the SharePoint admin center and the Microsoft 365 admin center, which forced most small teams to treat the task as a one-off project rather than ongoing governance. Now the lowered friction makes it easier to spin up additional home surfaces, yet the same small team still carries responsibility for permissions, content freshness, and user navigation across every site they already manage.
Analysis
Do not enable the new home site options until you have audited which sites already carry direct permissions or external sharing links. Run the check this week, then either lock the designation to your existing hub or turn the feature off at tenant level before it creates another unmanaged surface.
