Microsoft moves home site controls into the SharePoint admin center

SharePoint administrators can now create and designate home sites directly inside the SharePoint admin center. The change rolls out in Targeted Release early May 2026 and reaches general availability by the end of June. Viva Connections inside Teams is renamed the SharePoint app. New web parts for Resources and Announcements appear, along with a filmstrip layout option for the News web part. Existing home sites, branding, and custom names keep working without changes. Organizations that need multiple home sites still require specific licensing.
Before this update, most mid-sized companies kept their intranet on a separate home site that users rarely opened. The Teams experience sat in its own Viva Connections shell, so the two surfaces drifted apart and adoption stayed low. The change collapses that separation. The intranet now surfaces inside Teams by default under the SharePoint name, which means any stale content or broken navigation will be visible to every user who opens Teams rather than hidden on a forgotten site.
Analysis
Stop treating the intranet as a side project that lives outside Teams. Open the SharePoint admin center this week, confirm your current home site still meets the brief, and either commit to it or pick a replacement before the June GA date locks the choice in place.
