Microsoft makes on premises data gateway behave exactly like latest Power BI Desktop

The April 2026 on premises data gateway release, version 3000.314, adds admin triggered auto updates and aligns query logic with the matching Power BI Desktop version. Refreshes that run through the gateway in the Power BI service now produce the same results as local tests in Desktop. Administrators can now push updates across an organization on their own schedule. Users still have to download and install the new version manually for now.
Until this release, a report that refreshed cleanly in Power BI Desktop could still fail or return different numbers once it ran on a schedule through the gateway. The gap came from small differences in how the gateway processed queries compared with the desktop tool, leaving analysts guessing why their tested numbers did not appear in the published dashboard. The new alignment removes that surprise, yet it also removes the safety margin that once existed between a desktop test and a production refresh. Teams still carrying 200 step inherited queries that already take hours now face a tighter link between any future Desktop change and the live service, with less time to catch problems before an admin forces the next gateway update.
Analysis
Stop hoping the gateway will save you from your inherited mess. Open the slowest report today, pick the single Power Query step that adds the most time, and move that transformation upstream into the source or a dataflow before the next admin triggered update lands on your 4 hour refresh.
