Microsoft lets you describe a business app in Copilot and get a first build

On 10 September 2026, Microsoft said people can build business apps by describing the outcome, users, data, and actions in natural language. The capability appears in Copilot Cowork through an /app skill in the Microsoft Frontier program, and natively inside Copilot Studio. Copilot Studio app building entered public preview in the week after the announcement. Generated apps connect to organizational data and can be published as governed solutions, still using the platform’s existing connectors and controls. Microsoft’s own framing is that app creation can start inside Copilot surfaces, not only by opening Power Apps Studio and dragging controls by hand.
Until now, most internal makers still began in Power Apps Studio: pick a SharePoint list or Microsoft List, drop a gallery and form, then wrestle with Power Fx, layout, and later Power Automate. Copilot already helped with formulas and drafts, but the main path was still a blank canvas and a lot of manual assembly. What changed is the front door. A chat description can produce a starting app tied to company data, which is useful when a manager wants a tracker yesterday. The catch is unchanged: incomplete prompts, weak data choices, and unreviewed filters still produce apps that look finished and fail with real lists, permissions, or phones. Speed moved earlier. Judgement did not move out of the way.
Analysis
Treat this as a faster prototype path, not a finished app factory. If Studio preview is in your tenant, rebuild one process you already understand in a short prompt, then open the result and check the data source, gallery filters for delegation risk, form submit behavior, and phone layout before you demo it.
