Microsoft gives Copilot users free SharePoint governance reports

SharePoint Advanced Management features are now available to any Microsoft 365 tenant with at least one Copilot license. The change covers Enterprise, Business, GCC, GCC-High and DoD customers. The main additions are tenant-level Data Access Governance reports and permission state insights that flag oversharing. Access is granted automatically through a license check rather than a visible subscription. The update took effect on 18 May 2026.
Before this change, small IT teams could only see basic sharing reports or pay extra for Advanced Management. Most organisations with 100-2000 employees simply did not run regular permission audits because the tooling sat behind a separate licence. Now the same teams can generate detailed oversharing reports at no extra cost. The visibility arrives without extra staff or budget, turning previously hidden permission problems into documented risks that leadership can no longer ignore.
