Microsoft gateway update lets admins recover deleted connections for 30 days

Microsoft now lists on-premises data gateway 3000.334, the September 2026 build, among the last six versions it still supports. Secondary reports of the 25 September release say deleted standard-mode gateway clusters can be recovered for 30 days instead of being gone for good. The same build aligns query execution with September 2026 Power BI Desktop and Power Query Engine 2.158.928. Microsoft also moved Log4j to 2.26.1, fixed a Windows Server 2016 sign-in issue, and told Fabric users to stay on the latest gateway so Fabric fixes actually reach scheduled refresh. That latest-is-best advice is not clean. Fabric Community posts said 3000.334.2 and 3000.334.4 broke incremental Copy Jobs from on-premises SQL Server using change data capture, with a suggested rollback to the August build. Another report described lakehouse upsert failures from a System. IO.Hashing 9.0 versus 8.0 mismatch.
For years, a deleted gateway cluster meant a rebuild: reconnect sources, re-enter credentials, and hope scheduled refresh came back before the next pack was due. Desktop and gateway engines also drifted, so a query could succeed on a laptop and fail overnight. Support was already limited to the last six monthly builds, which made old gateways a quiet liability. The September build changes that bargain. Accidental deletion now has a 30-day recovery window, and matching engines should cut the Desktop-works, service-fails pattern. The catch is that the same version that adds recovery also introduced reported Fabric copy and upsert failures. Gateway version is no longer a background IT patch. It is a live control on whether reports refresh, and whether Fabric pipelines that feed those reports keep running.
Analysis
Treat this as a change to test, not a blanket upgrade. Note the gateway version on the machine that owns your scheduled refresh, then prove the next refresh and any Fabric copy jobs from on-prem SQL on a non-production cluster before you move production, and keep the August installer ready if CDC copy jobs are in the path.
