Microsoft folds semi-annual Office updates into the monthly channel from July 2026

From Version 2606 (Build 20131.20150), released 14 July 2026, Microsoft unifies Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel and Monthly Enterprise Channel for Microsoft 365 Apps into one enterprise channel. Devices that were on semi-annual now receive the same feature and security updates as monthly enterprise, and File > Account shows them as Monthly Enterprise Channel. The first jump from Version 2508 to 2606 is about 1.6 GB. Later updates follow normal monthly size and cadence. Existing policies and management tools keep working, with no reinstall required. Cloud Update can auto-onboard eligible devices. Version 2508 stays supported until 8 September 2026 if 2606 is blocked.
Many reporting teams kept Excel and related Office clients on semi-annual so feature churn stayed predictable around month-end packs, Power Query refreshes, and shared templates. That slower rhythm also meant Copilot and newer client capabilities often arrived later, or not at all, on those machines. After 2606, those same devices move to a monthly feature pace and can become Copilot-eligible if they meet the requirements. Naming and inventory change too: tools and compliance checks that still look for Semi-Annual may misread status until refreshed, while Cloud Update can pull devices forward unless exclusions are set.
Analysis
This is a change to act on only for machines that own critical Excel, Power Query, or Power BI Desktop reporting workflows, not a reason to chase every new Office feature. Inventory which reporting PCs are still on Semi-Annual, decide whether to take 2606 before your next close or hold on 2508 until September, and update any ownership notes or scripts that still key on the old channel name.
