Microsoft Fabric adds read-only data agents to query Power BI models
Microsoft Fabric now includes Data Agents, read-only tools that let AI applications pull data from Lakehouses or semantic models. These models are structured setups like Power BI data models. The agents use SQL, DAX or KQL query languages. Deployment runs through REST APIs, allowing scripted setup of Fabric items across development, testing and production environments. This separates data access from AI task handling, with built-in Fabric permissions for security.
Power BI users built data models manually, querying them via DAX measures that often broke under filter changes or refreshes. AI integration required custom scripts, risking data leaks or governance mismatches in shared Fabric workspaces. Data Agents now let AI apps query those same models read-only, enforcing Fabric's OneLake permissions without extra code.
