Microsoft ends Teams website live chat on 5 October

Microsoft is retiring Teams Live Chat, the website widget that sent visitor messages into Teams channels. New setups have been blocked since 6 August 2026. Full support ends on 5 October 2026. After that date the widget stops appearing and no new chats, escalations, or replies reach Teams. Existing chat history and channels stay under normal tenant retention rules. Microsoft points organisations toward Dynamics 365 Contact Center live chat or Copilot Studio contact-centre options instead. The feature had been available on Microsoft 365 Business Basic, Standard, and Premium, with a small agent limit while it was live.
For years a simple website widget could drop customer questions straight into a Teams channel, which felt like a free extra for smaller firms already paying for Microsoft 365. Support staff answered from the same app they used for internal work, without a separate chat product. That path is closing. Microsoft is pulling the lightweight option and steering buyers toward heavier contact-centre stacks. Everyday Teams users who never touched the widget lose nothing, but any site that still embeds it will go quiet overnight in October, and the replacement is no longer a free Teams feature you configure in an afternoon.
Analysis
This is a trap to avoid only if your company actually put the widget on a public site. Ask the person who owns the website or external support queue whether Teams Live Chat is still embedded, and if it is, get a removal date locked before 5 October rather than chasing a Dynamics or Copilot Studio project you do not need.
