Microsoft caps expanded OneDrive accounts and introduces paid storage

Office 365 IT Pros reports that affected tenants were told OneDrive accounts above 5 TB will become read-only between November 2026 and February 2027 until usage falls below the quota. Microsoft has also announced preview pay-as-you-go OneDrive storage at $0.20 per GB each month, with general availability planned for November 2026 and a 25 TB ceiling per user.
Tenants previously able to request expansion beyond 5 TB could treat large personal drives as durable working storage. The new enforcement window turns those exceptional accounts into an ownership, retention and cost decision before users lose write access. For a small Microsoft 365 team, the risk is not only the Azure bill. A rushed cleanup can remove live material, while doing nothing can leave a critical account read-only during ordinary work. The largest accounts need a named owner and an agreed reason to keep, move, archive or fund the data.
Analysis
Use the SharePoint Online usage report, Get-SPOSite or Microsoft Graph to list OneDrive accounts above 4.5 TB. Give each account an owner and record whether it will be reduced, moved or covered by paid storage before its enforcement window.
