Microsoft adds watermarks to Copilot video and audio
On May 22 2026 Microsoft updated its Cloud Policy documentation to let admins turn on watermarks for AI-generated video and audio inside Microsoft 365. Video carries a Copilot icon or similar mark. Audio receives the spoken line 'This audio is generated by AI.' Metadata always records additional provenance details. The setting is unavailable for US government GCC, GCC High, and DoD tenants. Image watermarks remain a separate user-controlled option and are not covered by this policy. SharePoint podcast audio will carry the watermark regardless of the policy until a later update. Image watermarks in Word and PowerPoint are expected by the end of June 2026. No option exists to change the wording or placement of the marks.
Before this change, nothing in the product itself flagged AI-generated video or audio to viewers or listeners. Admins relied on manual disclaimers or hoped users would remember to note the source. Now a single policy toggle can force the label across every Copilot-created clip or recording. For mid-sized tenants this adds one more setting that must be decided, documented, and explained to staff who already struggle to find content in sprawling Teams libraries.

This is another governance toggle that will create more questions than it solves until image support arrives. Check the Cloud Policy service today, decide whether to leave it off for now, and add the decision to your existing Teams naming and lifecycle policy document so the setting does not become another forgotten checkbox.
