Microsoft adds toggle to disable Copilot and AI recap during Teams meetings

Microsoft will let licensed meeting organizers and presenters turn Copilot, Facilitator, and recap features on or off while a meeting is running. The change responds to user complaints about unwanted AI participation. Targeted Release begins in early July 2026 and reaches general availability by the end of the month. No licensing or compliance changes are required. The toggle works only for organizers and presenters who already hold the necessary Copilot licences. Existing data protection rules stay in place.
Before this update, organizers had no way to stop AI features once a meeting started. The only controls sat in admin centers and required advance configuration. Now the decision moves to the meeting itself. This hands responsibility to the same people who already struggle with permissions and content ownership, without reducing the underlying risk that Copilot will expose old, overshared material.
Analysis
Block Meeting AI features at the tenant level for all but approved sessions and route exceptions through a short approval workflow. Relying on individual toggles will simply create another source of inconsistent governance.
