Microsoft adds Planner tasks to Microsoft 365 retention policies

Microsoft 365 Data Lifecycle Management is adding retention-policy support for Planner tasks. Administrators can retain or delete tasks in personal and group-backed plans based on when a task was created or last modified, with worldwide rollout due to complete by mid-August 2026.
Planner tasks have usually sat outside the retention-policy checks that administrators already apply to Exchange, SharePoint and Teams content. That makes it harder to explain how old plans and tasks should be governed when they form part of a regulated business process. Adding Planner to the same retention system closes part of that gap, but deletion policies can now affect forgotten plans as well as active work. SharePoint and Teams administrators need to understand which group-backed plans are still being used before broad retention rules begin removing tasks.
Analysis
Before applying a Planner deletion policy, inventory personal and group-backed plans and test the proposed retention period against a report of tasks that would be removed.
