Microsoft adds new Cloud Update controls for Office apps

Microsoft updated its Cloud Update documentation for Microsoft 365 Apps on 15 June 2026. The current experience includes profiles, channel management, rollout waves, update progress and health, exclusions, exclusion windows, pause, and rollback options. Microsoft says some assignment and channel features are still rolling out gradually, so not every tenant will see every control immediately.
Before this update, small Microsoft 365 admin teams could often leave Office app servicing on default settings and spend scarce time on higher-risk SharePoint and Teams work. That was not perfect, but it kept update management from becoming another full-time process. The newer controls give admins more ways to stage, pause, and roll back Office app updates. They are useful only if someone owns the rollout logic, knows which groups should receive changes first, and can tell support what happened when a feature or add-in breaks.
Analysis
Do not build a complicated wave plan because the controls exist. Pick one pilot group, one exclusion window, and one rollback owner for Microsoft 365 Apps updates, then document those three decisions before changing tenant defaults.
