Microsoft adds Copilot search inside Teams with new bot controls

The June 2026 Teams update introduces Copilot-powered contextual search across channels and meetings. File discovery now surfaces content based on conversation context rather than folder structure. Administrators gain new toggles in the Teams admin center for managing meeting bots and security signals. Some AI phone features remain in preview. Rollout is phased. Certified room hardware and mobile Office previews are also included.
Until now, abandoned channels, loose guest access, and direct permissions stayed invisible because users rarely searched them. Copilot changes that by making every file and conversation instantly findable through natural language. The practical result is that permission problems which used to surface only during audits will now appear in everyday search results, forcing small teams to confront sprawl they previously could ignore.

Treat this as a forced cleanup deadline rather than an optional upgrade. Run the new oversharing report in the Teams admin center this week, then block Copilot search on any channel with external guests or unclear ownership before the phased rollout reaches your tenant.
