Microsoft adds Claude model option to Copilot for tougher tasks

Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.8 model became available inside Microsoft 365 Copilot on 29 May 2026. It targets complex, multi-step work and is rolling out first to Copilot Cowork Frontier, Copilot Studio early release, Copilot Chat, Excel, and PowerPoint. The model improves tool selection and instruction following compared with the previous default. All outputs remain grounded in the user's organisational data through Work IQ. Access stays limited to licensed users in the Frontier and early-release channels for now.
Before this update, users had one default model and could blame weak output on its limits. Now they must decide which model to invoke and then judge whether the stronger model actually reduces the time spent checking facts, tone, and missing context. The addition therefore shifts the bottleneck from generation quality to review discipline. Teams that lack a shared checklist will see longer review cycles as different colleagues pick different models and produce inconsistent drafts.
Analysis
Do not default to the new model. First write a one-page review checklist that every Copilot draft must pass before it leaves your team, then test the Claude option on three real documents and record whether review time actually falls.
