Microsoft adds Claude model option to Copilot Cowork

Microsoft has integrated Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.7 model into Copilot Cowork. The update went live on 5 May 2026 and is available only through the Frontier preview programme. Users can now select the new model when running tasks that draw on data from Outlook, Teams and Excel. Everyone else continues with the existing default model. Access requires joining the preview first. No changes affect standard Copilot licences outside this programme.
Until this point Copilot operated with one primary model family for every request. Most users who tried it once and received generic output simply reverted to manual sorting and note-taking because the tool never became part of their daily rhythm. The addition of Claude creates a real alternative for more nuanced work. Yet the choice only matters after someone has already formed the habit of feeding Copilot clean, specific requests from their own inbox and channels.
Analysis
Skip the model selector entirely for now. Run the default Copilot inside Outlook on your ten most frequent email types for the next five days and measure how many minutes you actually save before you touch any preview settings.
