Microsoft adds bulk deletion for overshared SharePoint links

Microsoft has released a bulk remediation tool for overshared SharePoint links. The feature, part of Data Security Posture Management, allows administrators to disable excessive access across multiple sites simultaneously. The update coincides with the general availability of Purview integration in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center. This provides direct visibility into oversharing risks and tracks how users interact with Microsoft 365 Copilot. Additionally, Purview Data Loss Prevention for Copilot prompts is now generally available. This update actively blocks sensitive data from appearing in artificial intelligence responses.
Until now, cleaning up SharePoint permissions meant manually hunting through hundreds of abandoned team sites to revoke rogue sharing links. This created a massive compliance liability, as former contractors retained access and Copilot threatened to surface forgotten human resources documents to the wrong employees. The introduction of bulk remediation shifts this cleanup from a manual chore to a scalable process. By embedding Purview directly into the Microsoft 365 Admin Center, small IT teams can finally plug the permissions gaps that AI tools exploit, without needing to write complex PowerShell scripts.
Analysis
Copilot is essentially a search engine for your company's worst governance mistakes. Do not rely on the new data loss prevention filters to save you from a poorly structured intranet. Run the bulk remediation tool against your HR and Finance sites today to kill legacy sharing links before an employee asks AI for the payroll spreadsheet.
