Microsoft adds automatic AI summaries to Copilot Notebooks
Microsoft is rolling out a redesigned overview page for Copilot Notebooks in April 2026. The update automatically generates summaries, key insights and suggested actions from your existing notes. Users will see a new layout featuring one-click data extracts that bypass the need for manual prompting. The feature is enabled by default and strictly respects existing Microsoft 365 file permissions. Early access begins in early April for targeted release tenants. General availability worldwide follows in late April.
Until now getting value out of Copilot required users to stare at a blank chat box and guess the right instructions. This trial and error process frustrated employees and drove adoption rates into the ground. Most people simply abandoned the tool because writing a good prompt took longer than reading the actual notes. This update shifts the burden of effort from the user back to the software. By automatically surfacing insights without requiring a single typed command it removes the prompt engineering barrier entirely.
