Microsoft adds 53 new features to Copilot including external data connectors
The May 2026 update brings federated connectors for Canva, HubSpot, Linear, LSEG, Moody's, and Notion. It also adds GPT-5.5 Instant, Plan mode in Excel, Python support in Excel, and a redesigned mobile app. Teams gains call delegation and video recap. Copilot Notebooks receives another wave of updates. Exact rollout dates still vary by tenant and feature.
Before this release, Copilot mostly worked with files and meetings already inside Microsoft 365. Teams and managers could assume that any draft stayed within the company's own data perimeter. Now the same button can pull live data from external services. That expands what Copilot can reference, but it also expands what must be reviewed for accuracy, permissions, and compliance before anything leaves a draft.
Analysis
Do not treat the new connectors as automatic upgrades. Pick one external source your team actually uses and write a one-page rule on when it is allowed in Copilot and who must review the output.
