Microsoft 365 Copilot is now called Microsoft Copilot

Microsoft Learn updated its Copilot app deployment page on 18 September 2026. Microsoft 365 Copilot is now named Microsoft Copilot. Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat is now named Microsoft Copilot Chat. The note says security, compliance, and privacy for organisations are unchanged. The former Microsoft 365 Copilot app can still be deployed as a web app and as a desktop app on Windows and Mac. Windows devices with Microsoft 365 desktop apps install the app automatically if they run Microsoft 365 Apps Version 2511. Devices on Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel do not get that automatic install.
People already mixed up Microsoft 365 Copilot, Copilot Chat, Windows Copilot, Copilot Studio, and SharePoint agents. Training decks, licence emails, and prompt PDFs still used the Microsoft 365 prefix, so a weak result in one place often got blamed on the whole product family. The docs now treat Copilot as one brand name while the old app, chat, and channel rules stay in place. Colleagues will see a new label on the same buttons and assume the tool, data access, or review rules changed. They did not. The extra risk is a messy rollout conversation, not a new privacy model.
Analysis
Treat this as a naming trap to avoid, not a reason to rebuild workflows. Add a three-line map to your Copilot playbook that says Microsoft Copilot is the former Microsoft 365 Copilot, Microsoft Copilot Chat is the former Copilot Chat, and security terms are unchanged, then use that map in the next team question or rollout note.
