May Power BI update adds matrix tweaks and reporting options
Microsoft released its May 2026 Power BI update. The release includes nine changes focused on matrix visuals and report formatting. A YouTube walkthrough posted the same day shows the changes in action and links to a sample file. No performance or data modelling improvements were announced.
Before this update the reader's main constraint was already an inherited report with 200 undocumented Power Query steps that takes four hours to refresh. New matrix options do not reduce that refresh time or clarify the data lineage. After the update the gap widens: teams that already maintain clean models can adopt the tweaks quickly, while teams stuck with legacy files fall further behind because every new feature adds another layer they must test against broken queries.
Analysis
Skip the new visuals entirely until the existing report is rebuilt. Open the file today, locate the three slowest queries, and replace them with a minimal star-shaped model that refreshes in under ten minutes.
