Legacy Excel imports leave Power BI reports stale

Microsoft says semantic models created through Power BI’s retired Create-page Excel and CSV import experience stopped refreshing on 31 July 2026. They are due to stop loading on 31 August unless they are recreated using a supported import method.
A report can still open after its data stops refreshing, which is the awkward failure mode for a reporting owner. Readers may continue to act on a dashboard without realizing that its source workbook has fallen behind. This is a migration check, not a reason to abandon Excel as a data source. Microsoft says the supported Excel and CSV connectors still work; the risk is the old service import route and any semantic model created through it.
Analysis
Inventory any Power BI semantic models built from Excel or CSV through the service’s old Create page. Flag the owners, confirm the refresh date, and recreate affected models before the 31 August loading deadline.
