Gumroad Discover keeps 30 percent while direct sales keep far more

Gumroad Discover keeps 30 percent while direct sales keep far more

Fresh analyses dated 14 September 2026 walk through Gumroad’s two seller paths using pricing checked against Gumroad’s public pages. Sales through a creator profile or direct link take 10% plus $0.50, with card processing commonly modeled at 2.9% plus $0.30 on top. Sales where a new buyer finds and pays through Discover take 30%, and that cut is described as including processing. After paid monthly sales hit $20,000, qualifying direct sales can drop the platform slice to 5% plus $0.50. Modeled nets put standard direct near 87.1% of price minus about $0.80, high-volume direct near 92.1% minus $0.80, and Discover at 70% of price. On a $100 product that is roughly $86.30 direct versus $70 via Discover. On a $20 product it is about $16.62 versus $14. The pure platform break-even between the 10% plus $0.50 path and the 30% path sits near $2.50, or near $4.68 once typical processing is folded into the direct side. Models leave out ads, affiliates, refunds, FX, and delivery cost.

For years many tiny product businesses treated marketplace discovery as almost free distribution. You listed a course, template, or digital tool, hoped the feed sent strangers, and mentally budgeted something closer to a normal checkout fee. Direct links and profile sales were the “real” store, but Discover felt like bonus traffic rather than a separate P&L line. The September math makes the split impossible to ignore. Above low single-digit prices, Discover is a high take-rate acquisition channel, not a gentle platform tax. Fixed cents matter more on cheap impulse offers, the $20k monthly threshold only helps direct volume, and every Discover dollar you celebrate is a thinner net than the same buyer on a direct link. Parallel 2026 comparisons still point at merchant-of-record rivals near 5% plus $0.50, so the choice is less “Gumroad or nothing” and more “which path is carrying this sale.”

Analysis

Treat this as a trap to avoid on low-ticket unvalidated offers and a narrow test only when margin and repeat purchase can absorb a 30% cut. Before your next Gumroad push, price your actual SKUs under direct versus Discover nets and either raise the floor, kill Discover for that SKU, or keep Discover only as paid top-of-funnel while every email and post drives profile or direct checkout.
