Google starts replacing Gemini Gems with reusable skills this month

On 30 September 2026 Google began rolling skills into Gemini chat worldwide for users 18 and older. Skills are reusable instruction packs, written in an open Markdown file called SKILL.md, and they can carry reference files such as plain text, PDFs, or images. Workspace gets skills from 5 October, and the Gemini app from 13 October. Both rollouts are expected to finish by mid-November. On 17 November, Gems move into Settings but still work. Business and enterprise Gems cannot be created, edited, or used no sooner than 1 March 2027, when leftovers become draft skills. Education accounts last until 1 June 2027. A skill built in the Gemini app does not appear in Workspace. You have to recreate it there. Sharing, Drive files, and NotebookLM notebooks are promised later. You can no longer start a Workspace Studio flow with an Ask a Gem step.
Until now, Gems were the place many teams parked standing instructions so they did not have to re-brief Gemini every time. That felt like a custom assistant, even if it was really a saved prompt with extra files. The work still lived in one named Gem, and people treated that name as the workflow. What changed is the container, not the need for judgement. Skills are the new home for that context, but they launch without full Gem features and they do not travel between the consumer app and Workspace. If your team already split Gems across both, the same briefing will exist twice, or it will silently fail in the tool people actually use. Auto-migration later turns leftovers into drafts, which is a reminder, not a finished workflow.
Analysis
Treat this as a change to act on, not a feature to chase. Inventory every Gem that runs a recurring task, mark whether it lives in chat or Workspace, and rebuild only the keepers as skills in the surface where the work actually happens, with a clear review step, before Gems get buried in Settings on 17 November.
