Google Play fee cuts hit Australia with a same-day Android catch for games

On 30 September 2026 Australia joined Google’s post-Epic Play fee split, already live in the US, UK, and EEA since 30 June. Developers now pay a service fee plus a 5% billing fee if they use Google checkout. For those earning up to $1 million a year, the service fee is generally 10%. The revamped Games Level Up programme cuts the commission on game revenue above $1 million from 20% to 15%, but only if the title launches on Android the same day it launches anywhere else. Miss that window and the discount is locked for six months. Japan and Korea join the broader fee structure on 31 December 2026, with remaining regions due 30 September 2027. Hausfeld has announced a proposed $90 million US settlement for developers with $2 million or less in annual sales, with Google agreeing to keep a reduced 15% fee on the first $1 million for at least three more years. That deal still needed court approval as of 28 September 2026.
Until this year, Play’s take was a blunt 15% or 30% story, and Android could lag iOS or PC without extra tax. Small product makers treated store fees as a fixed tax and treated delayed Android ports as a scheduling choice, not a pricing choice. The split now makes the 5% billing line the real lever under $1 million, while the 15% game rate is a day-one distribution rule, not a gift. For anyone whose Android app is a later port, the headline cut never applies. Alternative checkout, where allowed, is the only way to drop that extra 5%, and the $90 million settlement is still not a done deal.
Analysis
This is a watch item unless you actually bill through Play. If you do, treat it as a change to act on: list which countries you sell in after today, then decide whether Google checkout’s extra 5% is worth the friction of another payment path. Do not plan around the 15% above-$1 million game rate unless you can ship Android on the same calendar day as every other store.
