Gemini carries custom instructions across more Workspace apps

Google is expanding persistent custom instructions from Gemini in Docs to Ask Gemini in Drive and Chat, plus the Gemini side panels in Gmail, Sheets and Slides. The gradual rollout began on 2 September 2026 and may take up to 15 days; Google says there is no administrator control for the feature.
People previously had to repeat preferences about tone, formatting and working style as they moved between many Gemini surfaces. That made otherwise useful AI assistance less consistent across a normal working day. The expansion gives managers and operators a practical way to carry their working preferences into more of Google Workspace. The instructions are personal rather than an organisation-wide policy, so important outputs still need review against team standards.
Analysis
Save one short instruction covering your preferred tone, output format and review expectations, then test it on the same task in Gmail and Drive to see whether the results stay consistent.
