Founders past 10k MRR more often got first buyers by messaging people

On 30 September 2026 Isaac Harold published a count of a year of MRR milestone posts across 12 founder subreddits. After dropping jokes and posts about other people’s businesses, 290 founders discussed their own revenue and 209 named where first paying customers came from. Among those under $10k a month, about a third found first customers in Reddit, forums, and Discord, and about one in ten used cold outreach. Among those past $10k, 8% started in communities and about a third got first customers by cold email or LinkedIn messages. Later growth most often cited content and search. Outreach stayed the main later channel for only 16%. The higher band also looked different on time, team, and price. Median time to current MRR was about 10 months versus 4 months for the under $1k group. Only 22% of the past-$10k group were solo, versus 82% below. Of 76 who gave a price, outreach-first median was about $90 a month, content about $60, community about $20. Thirty-one founders still named cold email or cold calling as something that did not work. This is self-reported Reddit milestone data, not a random sample.
The usual story in founder feeds is that first customers come from hanging around communities, posting in public, and waiting for inbound. That pattern does show up, but mostly in the under-$10k posts, at lower prices, and among people who are still mostly working alone. The posts past $10k more often describe a first sale that started as a named person being emailed or messaged, then later growth shifting to content and SEO. That does not prove outreach is magic. It does suggest community posting is a weak proxy for willingness to pay when the offer is meant to be a B2B product at a real monthly price. The same dataset also contains failures, tool-seller bias, and almost no solo $10k stories, so treat it as a channel mix clue, not a growth law.
Analysis
Treat this as a test of first-buyer path, not a reason to rebuild the product. If the offer is B2B and priced above hobby-community money, write a list of 30 specific people who already have the pain, send personal messages this week, and stop after that batch unless replies turn into paid intent.
