Excel Power Query Exchange connector will be retired in 2027

Microsoft will replace the current Microsoft Exchange connector in Excel Power Query with separate Exchange Mail and Exchange Calendar connectors. The change is aimed at the same mail and calendar pulls people already use in workbooks. Existing workbooks will not switch over on their own. Owners must reconnect those sources manually. The new connectors ship in Microsoft 365 Apps and Office 2024. Earlier Office builds will not get them. Microsoft plans customer validation in August 2026, tighter Online’s final EWS retirement phase in October 2026, and retirement of the current Excel Exchange connector in April 2027. Guidance for Contacts and Tasks will come later.
For years, a single Power Query Exchange connector could quietly feed Excel packs that count mail volume, calendar load, response patterns, or shared-mailbox activity. Those queries often live in personal workbooks, SharePoint folders, or one analyst’s monthly process, with little documentation and no clear owner beyond “it still refreshes.” That path now has a hard end date and a version gate. After April 2027, unmigrated connections fail. Even before then, anyone still on older Office cannot use the replacement connectors. The real change is operational: mail and calendar reporting in Excel becomes an explicit migration job, not a background refresh that survives forever.
Analysis
This is a trap to avoid if any trusted pack still pulls Exchange mail or calendar through Power Query. Inventory Excel files on shared drives and SharePoint for Microsoft Exchange query sources, note the owner and Office build, and schedule a manual reconnect on Microsoft 365 Apps or Office 2024 well before the 2026 validation window rather than waiting for a broken refresh in 2027.
