Excel on the web stops feeding Power Query into Python in October

Microsoft will stop loading Power Query data into Python in Excel for the web on 16 October 2026. After that date, Power Query cannot be used as a data source for Python when the workbook is open in the browser. Excel for Windows desktop is unchanged. Combining Power Query import with Python analysis still works there. Microsoft says no admin action is required and asks organisations to find people and processes that rely on the web combination and tell them. The notice was published as Message Center item MC1473149 on 16 September 2026.
Until now, a workbook that pulled data with Power Query and then handed it to Python could look the same in the browser and on a PC. That hid a fragile pattern: analysis that only some people could rerun, often in a file nobody treated as a reporting source of truth. After 16 October, that pattern splits. Browser-only reporting that pipes Power Query into Python will stop working as expected. Desktop Excel remains the supported path. Copilot, Fabric, and Power BI are not part of this change. The real issue is where the workbook lives, not a new analytics platform.

Treat this as a trap to avoid, not a reason to rebuild your stack. Search shared workbooks for Python that reads Power Query in Excel for the web, then either run those files on desktop Excel or replace the Python step with Power Query or a trusted Power BI measure before 16 October.
