Excel Copilot will build live dashboard canvases from workbook data

Microsoft’s roadmap points to a Copilot feature in Excel that builds an interactive canvas from the data already in a workbook. The canvas is meant to show key charts, metrics, and short insights in one polished view, and it updates when the underlying cells change. Users can reshape that view by chatting with Copilot rather than only dragging charts by hand. Coverage based on the roadmap says rollout should start in the coming weeks after early September 2026 reporting, with most users expected to see it by early October 2026. Access still depends on Copilot licensing and the usual staged tenant rollout. Public detail so far comes from roadmap wording, not a full general-availability feature guide.
Many monthly packs still live in Excel because that is where the formulas, Power Query steps, and stakeholder trust already sit. Power BI often loses the room when totals diverge from the workbook people know, so teams keep dual paths: a dashboard for show and a spreadsheet for the real number. A live canvas inside Excel changes the surface, not the foundation. Interactive summary views can stay next to the same grid that owns the logic, which may slow forced moves to Power BI for simple packs. It also raises the cost of sloppy workbooks: Copilot will happily present confident metrics on top of undocumented cleanup, mixed KPI definitions, and one-person fixes. Trust still comes from what the cells compute, not from how polished the canvas looks.
Analysis
Treat this as a trend to watch and a controlled test, not a reason to rebuild your reporting stack. When the feature lands in your tenant, run it on one stable workbook whose control totals you already defend in meetings, then confirm the canvas metrics still match those cells before you share it as a replacement pack.
