Cursor now picks the AI model for each coding task automatically

Cursor launched Cursor Router on 22 July 2026. It inspects each request’s query, context, complexity, and domain, then sends the work to a suitable model instead of whatever the developer left selected. Auto mode now runs on this router, with three tradeoffs: Intelligence for frontier quality, Balance for strong daily-driver quality, and Cost for acceptable quality at lower token spend. Cursor says the system was trained on more than 600,000 live requests and tested in online A/B experiments across millions of requests. It is on by default for Teams plans. Enterprise admins can turn it on per team or group, restrict modes, set defaults, and allow or block underlying models. Availability covers desktop, web, iOS, CLI, and SDK. Balance and Intelligence bill at the routed model’s rate.
Most solo builders still lock one frontier model as the daily driver. That means simple refactors, boilerplate, and docs edits get priced like hard architecture work. Cursor’s own traffic showed roughly 60% of developers doing exactly that, so routine product work quietly inflated AI bills without improving judgement on offers, funnels, or demand. The router changes the default economics. In Cursor’s A/B tests it kept frontier-level outcomes at about 60% lower cost. Early enterprise access reported 30–50% savings versus sending everything to Opus 4.8, with satisfaction holding or rising depending on mode. Cost per commit landed around $4.63 in Balance and $6.76 in Intelligence, versus higher figures for fixed frontier choices. For a tiny product shop, that is less about enterprise governance and more about stopping model choice from taxing every vibe-coding session.
Analysis
Treat this as a cost and attention fix, not a reason to ship more features. If you already live in Cursor, set Auto to Balance for one week of real product work, hide the routed-model display so you stop second-guessing, then compare token spend and commit quality against your old fixed daily driver before you touch Intelligence.
