Copilot Studio agents will soon read and write SharePoint lists

Microsoft added SharePoint list support to Copilot Studio agents. The feature enters preview in July 2026 and reaches general availability in September. Agents can now query and update SharePoint list data inside conversations and workflows. The change affects Microsoft 365 Roadmap item 566859. No other data sources or major UI changes were announced with this update.
Until now, agents in Copilot Studio worked with Dataverse, premium connectors, or custom APIs. Makers who stayed on SharePoint lists for simplicity had to keep agents and apps in separate worlds. The new capability collapses that separation. An agent can now reach the same list an app uses for requests, approvals, or status tracking, which means the same delegation limits, permission rules, and list thresholds suddenly apply to AI-driven actions as well.
Analysis
Assume any agent that touches your SharePoint lists will eventually write bad data or hit delegation walls. Before the September release, pick the three most important lists your apps use, restrict their permissions to the narrowest groups possible, and test a simple agent query against each one in a non-production environment.
