Copilot Planner Agent turns emails and Teams chats into tasks

Microsoft has released a Planner Agent for Microsoft 365 Copilot, allowing users to manage tasks through a conversational interface. Accessible under the 'All agents' menu, the tool scans emails, Teams chats, and meeting transcripts to generate action items automatically. The agent routes these new items directly into your personal 'My Tasks' view or existing shared basic Planner boards. It also integrates with the Outlook sidebar, letting users convert long email threads into scheduled tasks with due dates. The feature is currently limited to users with a Copilot license enrolled in the Frontier program. It cannot build new Planner boards from scratch or interact with Planner Premium, requiring users to point the AI at an existing basic plan.
Until now, bridging the gap between communication and execution required constant context switching. Workers had to manually copy text from a sprawling Teams thread or a buried Outlook email, paste it into To Do or Planner, and assign deadlines. This disjointed process meant critical action items frequently slipped through the cracks when inbox volume spiked. This integration turns Copilot into a central dispatch system for your daily workload. By allowing natural language commands to pull context directly from your communications, it eliminates the manual data entry that slows down task triage. The AI extracts the deliverables and puts them on your radar before you lose track of the thread.
Analysis
If your task management is already a scattered mess across To Do, Planner, and Outlook flags, this agent will just automate your chaos. Pick one primary basic Planner board today and designate it as your single catch-all for incoming work. Once you have access, use the Copilot sidebar in Outlook to funnel all email-based action items directly into that board to stop firefighting your inbox.
