Copilot Notebooks can now pull in Power BI reports as source material

Microsoft 365 Message Center notice MC1474458 says Copilot Notebooks will let users add Power BI reports as references. Copilot can then ground summaries, presentations, and briefs in that report data as well as ordinary files. Public preview is due worldwide from late September 2026 through mid-October 2026. General availability is planned from late October 2026 through mid-November 2026. If users already have Power BI and Copilot, Microsoft says no extra setup is required. Organisations without Power BI see no change.
Until now, most Copilot notebook work sat on documents, notes, and file dumps. Business numbers still lived in the Power BI report, the Excel pack, or whoever last checked the totals. Briefs and slide drafts could sound polished while staying disconnected from the dashboard leadership actually watches. That split is closing in a narrow way. Notebook output can now echo the same published report the business already treats as official. The upside is less retyping of KPI language. The downside is sharper: if the report is stale, the measure is fuzzy, or stakeholders still export to Excel because they distrust the total, Copilot will confidently repeat that problem in summaries and decks.
Analysis
Treat this as a trust multiplier, not a shortcut. Before the preview lands in your tenant, pick one report people already argue about and confirm scheduled refresh, ownership, and the written definition of the two or three KPIs leadership cites. Only then add that report as a notebook reference in a controlled test and compare the brief against the visuals side by side.
