Copilot makes overshared SharePoint content easier to find

A security analysis updated in late August 2026 says Microsoft Copilot reaches SharePoint through Microsoft Graph and returns material the signed-in user can already open. That includes content shared too widely through broken permission inheritance, "Everyone except external users" grants, anonymous links, and old security groups. Across more than 700 tenant reviews, the firm reports typical counts of 150 to 300 overshared SharePoint sites per enterprise tenant. It also cites 40 to 60 percent of sites showing at least one oversharing pattern and 15 to 25 percent of document libraries with broken inheritance. The same write-up stresses that Copilot is not jumping security boundaries. The problem is existing oversharing made far easier to discover once people ask an AI assistant instead of hunting folders by hand.
For years, internal builders treated a SharePoint list as the safe default for a canvas app. If colleagues could open the list in the browser, the gallery and form usually worked, and loose site sharing felt like a convenience that avoided ticket queues. That convenience now has a sharper edge. Copilot and other AI features that reason over the same Microsoft 365 content turn broad grants into fast answers. A list or library that was only mildly exposed in search can become trivial to surface in chat, which raises the cost of shipping another SharePoint-backed tracker without checking who actually has access.
Analysis
Treat this as a trap to avoid on your next list-backed app, not a reason to abandon SharePoint. Before you ship or point Copilot at that data, open the site and list permissions for the exact SharePoint list your app uses and remove "Everyone except external users," fix obvious broken inheritance, and confirm only the real audience can read or edit.
