Copilot in Excel gains finance skills and change tracking

Microsoft rolled out pre-built finance skills, federated connectors, workbook rules, and Plan with Copilot in Excel. Attribution now appears in Show Changes. The features are generally available for Microsoft 365 Copilot license holders. Custom skills remain in preview for Insiders with wider release next month. A Microsoft 365 Copilot license is required. Rollout follows the standard progressive schedule.
Until now Copilot mainly worked with text and meeting content. Finance teams could keep critical spreadsheets in isolated folders where visibility stayed limited. The new connectors and rules mean Copilot will now read, calculate, and explain live data from those same spreadsheets. Any permission gap or external link that existed before is now visible to an AI model that users will trust for forecasts and decisions.
Analysis
This is not an opportunity to celebrate new features. It is a hard deadline to close the gaps you already knew about. Run a focused scan of every Excel file with financial data that sits in a Team or SharePoint site with external sharing or unclear ownership, then apply sensitivity labels and tighten access this week.
