Copilot Chat adds GPT-5.5 for quicker answers

Microsoft says OpenAI GPT-5.5 Instant is now available in Microsoft 365 Copilot and Copilot Studio. In Copilot Chat it appears as GPT-5.5 Quick response in the model selector, while Copilot Studio early release environments see it as GPT-5.5 Chat. Microsoft says the model rolled out in May 2026 and is aimed at everyday work tasks, image analysis, and science, technology, engineering, and mathematics questions.
Copilot adopters now have more model choice, which sounds useful until users treat every task the same way. A fast model can be the right default for short questions, first-pass summaries, and quick checks, while heavier models still make more sense for complex multi-step work. The adoption problem shifts from 'what prompt should I use?' to 'which model is good enough for this task?' Teams need a simple rule of thumb so users do not waste time overthinking easy work or under-reviewing important drafts.
Analysis
Add a two-lane rule to your Copilot playbook: use GPT-5.5 Quick response for quick summaries, simple rewrites, and first-pass checks; switch to a deeper model when the output affects a client, a decision, a spreadsheet, or a manager review.
