Copilot can now add Planner tasks from chat

Microsoft 365 Copilot can create Planner tasks and look up task details, with Microsoft’s What’s New notes pointing to a September 2026 rollout. Work that used to start inside the Planner app can now start from a Copilot prompt. Independent tenant testing dated 14 September 2026 found a natural-language request created a private task, turned a relative due date such as Friday into a calendar date, and set priority to Important without being asked. Unlike some Outlook Copilot mail and calendar actions that ask you to Confirm or Send, that test task was created with no extra confirmation step. The test produced a private task, not an item on a shared plan. The feature still depends on Copilot and Planner licences and on the update reaching your tenant.
Task capture already splits across To Do, Planner, Outlook flags, Loop lists, and chat. People who try to keep one trusted list often lose follow-ups because a meeting action lands in a private note while the team looks at a shared plan. Copilot writing into Planner does not fix that split. It adds another front door. The change that matters is where the item first appears and how little friction there is. A private task with an inferred due date and an unasked Important flag can look like team work when it is only yours. If Copilot skips a confirm step, a casual prompt can create work you did not mean to file. Treat this as a capture shortcut, not a replacement for agreeing which list the team actually uses.
Analysis
This is a trend to watch, not a reason to move all follow-up into Copilot. After one test prompt, open Planner and To Do and check whether the item is a private task or on a shared plan, then keep using Copilot for capture only if that landing place matches how your team already tracks work.
