Claude Projects shift from folders to always-on multi-thread work

Anthropic is rolling out a redesigned version of Projects in stages, starting 17 September 2026 with select Pro and Max users on Claude Code cloud sessions. In the new model a project is treated as one ongoing conversation that can split work into parallel threads running in the cloud, with shared project context across those threads. Access is planned to widen to more Claude Code users, then to chat, Cowork, Team, and Enterprise. Existing projects in chat and Cowork keep working. Free users still get Projects with a five-project cap. Enhanced project knowledge with retrieval stays on paid plans. Usage still comes from the existing subscription, so running several threads at once can hit limits faster.
Until now, most professionals used Projects mainly as a place to park files and instructions so each new chat did not start from zero. That helped with context, but long jobs still lived as single threads you babysat, and team handoffs meant copying prompts or re-explaining standards. The redesign points Projects toward coordinated multi-session work: parallel workers, shared memory of the job, and the option to check progress from mobile while sessions run remotely. For non-technical leads that is closer to a real workflow system than a smarter blank chat. It also raises the cost of sloppy design. More threads mean more output to review, faster burn of plan limits, and a bigger gap between a tidy personal win and a process a colleague can run safely.
Analysis
Treat this as a trend to watch, not a reason to rebuild your stack during a Code-first beta. Pick one recurring multi-part task you already run in Claude or ChatGPT, write the shared business context, done definition, and human review step once, and keep it as a single-thread Project blueprint until multi-thread access reaches the surfaces your team actually uses.
