Claude Opus 5 becomes the default upgrade as older Opus leaves Copilot

Anthropic launched Claude Opus 5 on 24 July 2026. The company positions it as close to its higher frontier model at roughly half the prior price point, and as the new default on Claude Max and the strongest option on Claude Pro. Vendor evaluations highlight gains on coding and knowledge-work suites such as Frontier-Bench and GDPval-AA, with performance that varies by an effort setting that trades intelligence for speed and token cost. Anthropic says it beats the prior Opus generation on valuable software engineering tasks at similar cost. GitHub will remove Claude Opus 4.7 from Copilot on 2 October 2026 and points users to Opus 5. Vercel’s AI Gateway already documents routing for Claude Code and agent flows under anthropic/claude-opus-5 identifiers.
For months the practical ceiling for a tiny product shop was not raw model IQ. It was whether the model you already pay for could finish a coding pass, a support draft, or a long-form offer without burning tokens, drifting context, or forcing a second human rewrite. Older Opus tiers sat in that middle band: capable enough to ship, expensive enough that every agent loop and every rewrite still felt like a tax on founder time. That band just moved. Copilot and gateway paths now steer you toward Opus 5 as the concrete replacement, not an optional experiment. If the cost-performance claims hold on your real tasks, the same daily AI budget buys more finished product and marketing artifacts. If they do not, you still face a forced model change by early October, so the comparison work cannot wait until something breaks mid-launch.
Analysis
Treat this as a forced migration window, not a reason to rebuild your whole stack. Before 2 October, pick one revenue-critical workflow you already run (a sales-page section, a support reply pack, or a single Claude Code / Cursor feature slice), run it once on your current model and once on Opus 5 at the same effort setting, and keep the new default only if quality, latency, and token cost clearly improve on that fixed task.
