Claude merges chat and Cowork into one assistant

Anthropic is folding Claude Cowork into ordinary Claude chat so people no longer choose a mode before they start. From any conversation, Claude can route tools and longer multi-step work, and existing Cowork tasks, projects, connectors, skills, artifacts, and files carry over. Claude Docs and Claude Slides are in beta on paid plans, and Claude Design now works inside conversations. Users can create, edit, present, or download documents and slides as PowerPoint or PDF. By default Claude asks before taking actions, and check-in preferences can be adjusted. Rollout began 16 September 2026 for Pro and Max on web, desktop, and mobile over coming weeks. Team and Free follow later. Enterprise admins get at least 30 days’ notice. Anthropic notes that agent-style multi-step work can use allowance faster.
Before this, many people treated chat as the place for quick answers and Cowork as the place for longer jobs, documents, and connectors. That split forced a decision at the start of every task and made it harder to keep business context, skills, and files in one repeatable path. Work often restarted in the wrong surface, then needed re-briefing. Now the product default is one thread that can pull in the heavier tools when needed. That cuts mode friction, but it does not remove the real failure mode for non-technical operators: generic drafts, missing context, and silent drift on multi-step runs. The merge makes reusable workflows easier to house in one place. It also makes usage burn and unchecked agent steps easier to overlook if review rules are weak.
Analysis
Treat this as a consolidation opportunity, not a green light for unsupervised long runs. When the unified Claude appears on your plan, take one recurring team deliverable you already trust and rewrite it as a single-thread workflow blueprint: fixed inputs, allowed connectors, mandatory check-ins before file changes, and a human quality check before anything is shared.
