ChatGPT Data agent turns questions into governed dashboards

OpenAI introduced the Data agent for ChatGPT Work on 10 September. The agent connects to administrator-approved data sources, can create and interact with dashboards, and uses the connected account’s existing permissions, including configured table, row and column restrictions.
Teams often treat access to a chatbot as the beginning of an AI-data pilot. The harder work comes first: deciding which sources are trusted, who owns business definitions, which actions need approval, and how a user checks the evidence behind an answer. Data moves those decisions into a practical workplace surface rather than a future architecture diagram. That raises the value of a small, governed pilot with a named dataset and reviewer, while making broad connector enablement a poor first move.
Analysis
Start with one bounded question that already has a trusted report and owner. Enable only the data connection needed for that test, require users to inspect the evidence behind the answer, and record where the agent’s result matches or departs from the established metric.
