ChatGPT Data agent brings governed analysis into Power BI

OpenAI introduced the Data agent for ChatGPT Work on 10 September. It connects approved company data sources and can work with Power BI and other business-intelligence tools, using the organisation’s configured business terms and the connected account’s existing permissions.
Report builders already know that a dashboard only earns trust when its measures, definitions and access rules are clear. A conversational request cannot repair a weak semantic model, missing ownership or an inconsistent metric. The new agent gives colleagues another way to ask questions and create or refine dashboards from governed data. That can reduce basic request queues, but it also makes the report builder’s model, definitions and evidence trail more important—not less.
Analysis
Treat Data as a governed consumption surface, not a replacement for your semantic model. Before a pilot, choose one Power BI workspace, document its metric definitions and owners, and test whether the answers preserve the same numbers and caveats as the existing report.
