Anthropic opens a review portal for Claude plugins

On 25 September 2026 Anthropic opened a directory submission portal so developers on paid Claude plans can list plugins. A plugin packages MCP connectors, Agent Skills, or both. You submit either one remote MCP connector or a plugin bundle hosted on GitHub. There is no partner programme to join first. Anthropic reviews and safety-scans each submission before it appears at claude.ai/directory. Once live, submitters get usage analytics. A single discovery experience is planned to roll out across Claude and Claude Code over coming weeks. Chat, Cowork, and Claude Code load different parts of a plugin. Local MCP servers run only in Cowork and Claude Code, not in chat, and they run with the same permissions as other local programs.
Until now, extra Claude capability lived in private installs, GitHub, or one-off MCP wiring. That kept distribution founder-to-founder and made it hard to see whether anyone actually used the connector after they cloned it. A reviewed directory plus usage numbers changes the channel, not the offer. Paid users can add listed plugins, but listing still depends on Anthropic review, and the same plugin will not behave the same in chat as it does in Cowork or Claude Code. That is a distribution path with friction, not a new product category you should rebuild around.
Analysis
Treat this as a trend to watch, not a reason to start a plugin-first product. If you already ship a remote MCP or a GitHub skill bundle that a paying user would install, submit that one item through the portal and use the analytics to see if anyone adds it. If you do not already have that, skip the new surface until discovery actually lands.
