Anthropic launches Routines for scheduled Claude Code automation
Anthropic has released Claude Code Routines in research preview. These are persistent setups pairing prompts with code repositories and connectors like Slack or Linear. They execute complete Claude Code sessions on Anthropic's cloud and push results to claude/ branches. Routines activate via cron schedules every hour or longer, API POST requests, or GitHub events such as pull request openings and releases. This supports unattended tasks including PR reviews, documentation updates, and deployment checks. Usage counts toward daily limits on Pro, Team, and Enterprise plans, with excess billable for organisations. GitHub triggers cap at one per hour, and routines cannot yet be shared across users.
Professionals relied on interactive AI sessions or fragile scripts in tools like Zapier and GitHub Actions. These often broke silently, forcing constant manual fixes and heavy prompt refinement that drained hours from the day. Cloud routines now deliver reliable, event-driven execution without local machines or ad-hoc prompting. This embeds business rules into reusable configs, slashing cognitive load on routine operations and exposing Zapier's validation gaps.
