AI users take on work beyond their formal roles

OpenAI analysed more than 800,000 messages from US ChatGPT users and found that 16.8% of work-related messages involved tasks associated with another occupation. After removing generic work such as writing, summarising and scheduling, 43.5% of the remaining occupation-specific messages crossed role boundaries, with smaller workplaces showing more crossover among average users.
Managers have often treated workplace AI as a faster way to do the work already inside a job description. That model leads to prompt libraries and productivity targets focused on speed, while cross-functional handoffs still look like someone else's problem. The research suggests AI is also letting people absorb pieces of marketing, analysis, finance and technical troubleshooting that once required a specialist handoff. That can remove bottlenecks, but it also moves people into work where they may not recognise the missing assumptions, rules or risks, so the useful workflow needs an expert check or escalation point.

Choose one cross-functional task you already use AI for. Write down the input, the assumption you cannot verify alone, the expert check and the point where the task must be handed back.
