How do I ask customers for testimonials without feeling needy or asking at the wrong time?

When developing landing pages or creating ads: 'I wish I had some testimonials or customer quotes to add here'; makes mental note but never acts.

Original Community Request

I know testimonials are good for business but I am too embarrassed to ask and also I am not sure what to ask them for (video, quote) and what questions to answer. When I developing a landing page, creating ads I am always thinking "I wish I had some testimonials or customer quotes to add here". I make a mental to note to actually ask for some but never get around to it as it just feels too needy. No, embarrassingly, I have never asked for a testimonial. It just feels too desperate some how so i dont bother. I have read time and time again that testimonials are brilliant to put on ads and landing pages. I've ever read them on other sites products and am always impressed (even if a little sceptical that they are true). So I am pretty sure we're leaving money on the table. I am unsure on the best solution tbh. But something automatic so i dont have to think about it lol. Obviously, I need to ask for a testimonial at the right time because there's no point asking them on day 1 when they've not used our app. So ideally something which gives me an email to send when they've hit a point where they've had some success.

Problem Snapshot

Core Blocker
The founder knows testimonials would improve landing pages and ads, but never asks because it feels needy/desperate, they do not know whether to request a video or quote, and they lack a clear trigger for asking after a customer has achieved success.
Context
This happens whenever the founder is building landing pages or ads and sees empty social proof sections. They make a mental note to ask customers later, but avoid it because the ask feels awkward and there is no system for identifying the right customer moment.
Tried So Far
No, embarrassingly, have never asked for a testimonial. Feels too desperate so doesn't bother.
Stakes
Landing pages and ads launch without social proof, likely reducing conversion and paid ad performance. The founder believes they are leaving money on the table because testimonials impress them on other sites, but their own product lacks comparable proof.
Frequency
Always when building landing pages or ads.
Experience Level
Intermediate founder: understands landing pages, ads, and the value of social proof, but has never collected testimonials or built a request workflow.
Investment / Cost
No direct spend yet; opportunity cost from underperforming landing pages and ads due to missing social proof.
Dream Outcome
An automatic workflow that detects when a customer has reached a real success milestone, then gives the founder a ready-to-send testimonial request email with the right format and questions, without making the ask feel needy.
Required Inputs
  • Product usage events that indicate a customer has reached a success milestone
  • A list of active customers or users eligible to be asked
  • Customer email address or preferred contact channel
  • A short description of the product outcome the customer achieved
  • Current landing page or ad sections where testimonials would be used
  • Email tool or no-code automation tool capable of sending or drafting requests
Boundaries
  • Must not feel needy, desperate, or salesy
  • Must not ask customers on day 1 before they have experienced value
  • Must not require manual chasing or remembering to send the ask
  • Must not require writing code or building a complex CRM setup
  • Must not force video testimonials only; text quotes should also work
  • Must not auto-publish testimonials without founder review
Best Quotes
  • too embarrassed to ask
